The U.S. Federal Trade Commission has a series of free publications on consumer credit issues, including "Fiscal Fitness: Choosing a Credit Counselor," and "Knee Deep in Debt." Both are available on the FTC website (www.ftc.gov/credit) or by calling 1-800-FTC-HELP (382-4357).
