The debt settlement industry is still in its infancy, however, there are responsible professionals within the trade have recognized the need for associations that can develop and provide standards, codes of ethical and professional behavior, guidelines for consumer protection, and public advocacy for both consumers in need of debt settlement and the industry seeking to provide the service. The principal trade groups for the debt settlement industry are the Association of Settlement Companies (TASC) and U.S. Organizations for Bankruptcy Alternatives (USOBA). Each of these groups provides codes of ethics and professional standards for companies or individuals affiliated with or accredited by them. Also, the International Association of Professional Debt Arbitrators (IAPDA) is a professional organization that provides education, certification, and training for persons providing debt management services.
